HERE’S WHAT REALLY HAPPENED –> AND BANQUET INFO.

Posted by tcwxc on October 31, 2007

Well what a day it was. Not one of those that you wish to have very often; – in one respect. Then on the other hand it was a day where we triumphed greatly, just not as we normally look at it.

We went, we saw, we competed well. We ran into a situation where there were 4 strong teams in our regional that have good pack running teams. This year we are stretched out, and we have had a weak spot at the back of the varsity. I don’t think that will be a problem in the future, but that’s what we have this year. There isn’t unfortunately the ability to cover or compensate by fellow team members in that area enough when a teammate is having a particularly bad day. That is where those 4 teams were able to take advantage of our situation. There’s no way around it. Still good job to all that ran, if you did your best that you could possibly do on the day, then you should have no regrets. We will get stronger.

We had outstanding races from several on the varsity. Excellent running in slow conditions. Intelligent, hard-nosed racing. I’m very pleased to see it happening.

Here’s the results:
1- Hudsonville 65
2- Rockford 67
3- TCC 74
4- TCW 75
5- East Kentwood 94
6- Grand Haven 196
14 teams total

1- Geoff Burns 16:23
2- Erik Wilson 16:25
15- Dan Riggins 17:05
24- Mitch Snider 17:24
31- Matt Laylin 17:39
62- Ray Innis 18:31
66- Heath Bristol 18:43

Full results can be found at mhsaa.com look at the tournaments section.

TEAM BANQUET – 2 WEEKS AWAY! (& regional info.)

Posted by tcwxc on October 25, 2007

Many of you have never been to our team banquet before. It isn’t quite typical. We try to make more of it, in order to express what we see and enjoy in this sport. We hand out awards as usual, but it is much more. As with the Elk Rapids potluck party, this is also a potluck; held at our adoptive home > Twin Lakes camp. (park) Being such, it requires that each family participate for fullest success. We don’t want bad food for too many $, as I’ve had at many other teams’ banquets in the past. We do it all for this one and it has always turned out wonderfully. The food has always been great, the atmosphere is always terrific.

Make sure that you put it on your most recent calendar, the season isn’t complete without this!

>>> FOR REGIONAL INFO. SEE THE ARCHIVES ON LEFT SIDE OF PAGE.

Here is a message from Mike & Linda Riggins who are orchestrating the banquet again this year. (By the way we will be needing a brave soul or 2 to take over the banquet for next year!) (It’s pretty much a patented operation that is passed on year to year)

Plan to join us at the team banquet on Thursday, November 8, from 6pm to about 9:30 pm. We’ll meet at the Gilbert Lodge at Twin Lakes camp, north side of North Long Lake rd., about 1 1/2 miles west of the high school.

Cost is $5 per person, with a $20 maximum per family.

You will need to bring a dish to share – to feed 12 according to this breakdown:

Seniors- dessert
Juniors & Sophomores – Main dish
Freshmen – Salad, fruit or veggie dish

Beverages, rolls & place settings are provided.

Call Linda Riggins at 392-5370 to volunteer to help or to learn more.
(volunteering can mean making phone calls, making arrangements, picking things up on the day, helping set up ahead of time, or cleaning up after)

Be on the lookout in your e-mail and/or through a handout for the registration and payment slips.

Register *today* — we need to know how many to plan for! Thank you.

Lots of things to catch up on, so I’ll do my best with the time I have…

ELK RAPIDS INVITE
A good day! Many of the guys were still a bit worn from the conference meet, and that’s ok, that was the big meet of the week. Everyone ran well at this one, and if it weren’t so windy the times would certainly have been better. The places showed the story though. As both the Varsity and JV squads were able to dominate the competition.

Varsity race:
1- TCW 21 (overall & large div.) (benzie was 2nd overall)
2- Holly 62
3- TCC 68 (JV)
4- Gaylord 83

(places are for large div. placing)
1- Geoff Burns 16:48
2- Erik Wilson 16:58
4- Mitch Snider 17:05
5- Dan Riggins 17:11
9- Matt Laylin 18:17
11- Heath Bristol 18:25
16- Ray Innis 18:37

JV race:
3- Sebby Kucera 18:31
4- Kirk Harris 18:32
5- Robert Cozad 18:34
6- Ben Dean 18:37
8- Alex Hawke 18:52
9- Trent Hibbard 18:53
10- Russell Carter 18:56
– Joe Yancho 18:58 (actual places not available past our #10 runner)
– Jon Miller 19:00
– Jack Lyon 19:05
– Glenn Hasenmyer 19:08
– Jordan Huffman 19:14
– Sam Messina 19:14
– Alex Goldsmith 19:18
– Chris Chargo 19:32
– Ryan Schaef 19:46
– Brad Allen 19:50.4
– Jacob Helmka 19:50.7
– Dan Cholger 19:59
– David Hanrahan 20:02
– Eric Rivard 20:05
– Eric Brefka 20:10
– Eric Nixon 20:22
– Dan Schmidt 20:39
– Spencer Crouch 20:40
– Aaron Glauch 20:42
– Jake Nickerson 20:53
– Tyler Stephens 20:58
– Kasey Goss 21:04
– Fabian Golota 21:15
– Nick Callahan 21:17
– Forrest Verellan 21:21
– Brendan Lyons 21:24
– Ethan Poirier 21:34
– Max Yancho 21:52

Great job to all! I know that some of you could have finished farther up, but that isn’t what it’s all about. It’s more about learning to push yourself, and doing more when your initial instinct is to back off and say that’s good enough. Racing through being tired is a lesson in competition, and it’s also a lesson in life. Toughen up!

A good potluck party as well! I hope everyone enjoyed themselves, and thanks for bringing a great spread of foods!

GAYLORD ROTARY INVITE.

A fine day in Gaylord to cap off the season for most of these runners! The third race in one week, and you would hardly know it. Just about everyone ran extremely well, if not at least a very strong race. My congratulations to all on a very good season!
Five guys get the opportunity to run the unofficial JV race at the regional championship this Saturday. So they get one more shot at a flat and fast course.
We had a few key figures either out with illness or recovering from, otherwise I would see us as finishing in second overall vs. the varsity from almost all of the other schools. (TCC & Petoskey ran 2nd team as well)
Congratulations on your season. Now let’s finish it off right, and see the Varsity through the end.

Varsity race:
1- Benzie 33

SIDE NOTE: I NEVER THOUGHT TO PUT THIS ON THE BLOG, BUT PLEASE DON’T PARK NEAR THE SCHOOL WHERE THE BUS IS GOING TO DROP US OFF! THE DRIVERS CAN’T GET IN, IT BECOMES VERY CONGESTED, AND IT JUST ISN’T NECESSARY IN THE LEAST. YOUR SON IS PERFECTLY CAPABLE OF WALKING QUITE A DISTANCE TO GET TO WHERE YOU PARK. IT’S ACTUALLY GOOD FOR HIM, AND IT’S FAR BETTER AT THE BACK CIRCLE. SO FOR WHAT’S LEFT OF THE SEASON DON’T PARK IN THE SCHOOL SIDE OF THE CIRCLE.

[[[[[[[[[ REGIONAL INFORMATION ]]]]]]]]]

Ok, I forgot to find out what the cost of the charter bus is for Saturday. I’ll have to find out tomorrow and post it then.
This Saturday the 27th we will run our regional championship race. We are Div. 1 Regional 2 (1-2) hosted by Grand Rapids Christian H. S. 15 schools with what appears to me to be a race primarily between 5 schools. We figure into this race heavily, as does Rockford, then there is TCC, Hudsonville and East Kentwood. Those are the teams that I see as the most likely contenders. Looks like a very good race brewing.

We all need to meet at the school at 10:15
The bus leaves at 10:30
2:00 – Div 2 girls
2:45 – Div 1 girls
3:30 – Div 2 boys
4:15 – — Div 1 boys be there!

5:00 JV race for the chosen 5 on our team.

We will stop at the 131 / 46 (?) intersection to eat on the way back home. I would expect that we’ll make it back to the school around 9:45 – 10:00.
All JV’s have been told that they are going because the Varsity wants them there for their support. At the same time they are to be courteous and respectful of the competition, race officials, — our own Varsity most of all, at the same time that they may well be riotous.

There is a $5.00 entry fee. I don’t know if our team members other than varsity will need to pay, but we’ll need to be prepared for that.
It’ll cost $2.00 for spectators to park a car. (I need to host one of these!)

Once at the course please be aware of the races and the course itself. Nerves are edgy, steer clear of your son until well after. Stay out of the way of the races… and enjoy!

Directions:
Take 131 south to Grand Rapids
take 96 East toward Lansing, around the east side of GR
Exit at 28th street going west
Turn left (south) on Broadmoor Ave
Follow Broadmoor south to 36th st.
Turn right on 36th
The course is located at the Christian Reformed Recreation Center – fellowship greens golf course, 3450 36th st. SE 49512. The spectator entrance is off of 36th street.

WONDERING WHAT TO BRING TO A POT-LUCK?
WELL, UNLESS YOU JUST HAVE NO TIME, PLEASE DON’T BRING A DESERT. MY NIGHTMARE IS TO HAVE 30 PARENTS THINKING THAT THEY’RE JUST TOO BUSY, AND THEY ALL BRING A DESERT. MY EFFORT IS TO TRY TO EDUCATE YOUR SON ON BETTER NUTRITION. THIS YEAR THERE SEEMS TO BE A LOT OF RESISTANCE TO EATING WELL.

GREAT POT-LUCKS ARE THE ONES WHERE EVERYONE CAN GO AWAY FEELING SATISFIED, HAVING HAD MAIN DISHES, CROCK POT SPECIALS, VEGGIE DISHES, BEANS. A HUGE VARIETY.

I DIDN’T WANT TO EVEN GET INTO THIS, PREFERABLY. I DO A GOOD 14 HOURS A DAY MYSELF.

SEE YOU TOMORROW. Z

THE TEAM HAS BEEN WARNED ABOUT BEING AT A FULL FOOTBALL GAME ON FRIDAY NIGHT. THEIR OWN RACING IS IMPORTANT, AND SHOULD BE MORE IMPORTANT THAN ANOTHER TEAMS COMPETITION. WE ARE AT A CRUCIAL POINT OF THE SEASON FOR THE DEVELOPMENT. IN ORDER TO RUN THEIR BEST THEY CAN’T BE SHIVERING AT A GAME FRIDAY NIGHT. I EXPECT THEM TO PERFORM WELL SATURDAY AS DOES THE REST OF THE TEAM.

SEE YOU SATURDAY, I HOPE EVERYONE CAN MAKE IT TO THIS MEET THAT IS SO CLOSE TO HOME.

THE SEASON SLIPS AWAY QUICKLY. THE CHAMPIONSHIPS RUSH PAST AND IT’S ALL FINISHED BEFORE IT SEEMS YOU CAN FULLY APPRECIATE WHAT HAS HAPPENED. SUDDENLY WHAT YOU’VE BECOME USED TO IS SIMPLY A MEMORY AND AFTER SCHOOL YOU ENTERTAIN YOURSELVES, AND SOMETIMES WISH YOU STILL COULD BE WITH THE TEAM.

LET’S MAKE THE MOST OF IT WHILE IT IS STILL HERE. FOLLOW DIRECTION, DO WHAT YOU’VE LEARNED. RACE TO YOUR UTMOST ABILITY. MOST OF ALL BELIEVE IN YOURSELVES AND KNOW THAT YOU HAVE SO MUCH MORE THAT YOU CAN ACCOMPLISH – RIGHT NOW!

SATURDAY BRINGS THE ELK RAPIDS INVITE. 2nd TO LAST MEET FOR THE JV RACERS. WITH THE MOMENTUM BUILDING IT’S A GREAT TIME FOR A GREAT RACE. EVEN IF IT’S SOAKING WET, IT’S STILL A FAST RACE.

THE VARSITY WILL NEED TO MEET HERE BY 9:50. LEAVE HERE BY 10:00. I HAVE 2 DRIVERS FOR THE VARSITY SO FAR, I’M GUESSING WE MAY BE ALL SET FOR THEM.

SOME OF YOU WILL WONDER WHY I’M NOT RUNNING MULTIPLE VARSITY TEAMS LIKE SOME GIRLS TEAMS THAT WE KNOW OF. – THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE, THESE GUYS LIKE TO WIN! WE CAN GO TO THIS RACE AND COMPETE FOR A JV CHAMPIONSHIP, IN THAT WAY THEY AREN’T JUST RUNNING FARTHER BACK IN THE VARSITY RACE. IT’S EXHILiARATING TO HAVE THEM PERFORM WELL AT THE FRONT OF THE RACE.

9:00 girls jv
9:45 boys jv
10:30 girls middle sch.
11:00 boys middle sch.
11:30 girls varsity

>>>> ELK RAPIDS UPDATE <<<<<<

Posted by tcwxc on October 17, 2007

THIS ISN’T THE FULL INFO. FOR SATURDAYS’ RACE YET, – I’LL GET THAT ON HERE BY 10:00 OR SO TONIGHT WHEN I FINALLY GET DONE WITH WORK. I’LL ALSO GET THE RESULTS FROM YESTERDAYS GREAT PERFORMANCE AS WELL.

-> FIRST I WANT TO GET THE INFO. OUT THERE THAT WE WILL BE NEEDING PARENT DRIVERS FOR SATURDAY TO THE ER INVITE. THE JV’S RUN EARLY AT 9:45. THAT MEANS THAT WE NEED TO LEAVE MY PLACE BY ABOUT 7:45 SO THAT WE HAVE ENOUGH TIME TO GET THERE AND SET UP, WITH PLENTY OF TIME FOR THE WARM-UP

TEAM MEMBERS ARE NOT ALLOWED TO DRIVE TO THIS ONE AS IT IS CONSIDERED OUT OF TOWN. THAT MAKES IT MORE AWKWARD, AND WE MUST ASK FOR THE HELP FROM PARENTS. BY CAR POOLING WE SAVE QUITE A BIT FOR OUR TRANSPORTATION BUDGET.

I AM GOING TO HAVE THE VARSITY SHOW UP LATER, SO WE WILL NEED A COUPLE OF CARS TO DRIVE THEM UP AROUND 10:15 TO ARRIVE BY 10:45 AT THE LATEST.

IF YOU CAN HELP PLEASE CALL 941-8494 OR E-MAIL ME @ ZEMPER@CHARTERMI.NET THANKS, Z

Big North Championship -> Gaylord

Posted by tcwxc on October 14, 2007

This Tuesday the 16th is the final Big North meet. This meet is the true championship. Although the first two meets account for 25% each of the total scoring for the championship, the real test is who is best at the end of the season. Being the best at the end of the season is what it’s all about, and what we need to focus on. For the over-all championship we can play spoilers by defeating Petoskey.

For Tuesday:
Excused from class : 12:45
Bus leaves : 1:00
Girls Varsity : 4:00
Boys Varsity : 4:40
Boys & Girls JV : 5:20

The race is once again being held at the Gaylord Country Club. A very good course, challenge, still fairly quick.

Directions:
131 North from Kalkaska – thru Mancelona – to Alba,
in Alba – at the blinker light, turn right on C-42
follow C-42 until it ends west of Gayord at C-32
turn left on C-32, and drive about half a mile – the Gaylord country club will be on your left

See you there, Z
